Here’s what the title, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, really means. Written and directed by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, El Camino will serve as a sequel to the critically-acclaimed crime drama that ran from 2008 to 2013. El Camino will focus on the whereabouts of Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) but it’s expected to feature a number of other Breaking Bad alums.
Development for a Breaking Bad sequel movie began prior to the tenth anniversary of the show’s release. In 2018, rumors began to swirl regarding the project but no news was confirmed. El Camino was filmed in Albuquerque under the working title “Greenbriar.” Some former cast members, such as Bryan Cranston and Bob Odenkirk, openly talked about the movie’s existence, but major plot details were shrouded in secrecy.
In August, an official teaser trailer was released, unveiling the focus on the mystery surrounding what happened to Jesse after the events of the Breaking Bad finale. By the end of the series, Jesse was being held hostage at Jack Welker’s (Michael Bowen) compound and forced to cook meth. After Walter White (Cranston) killed Jack and the other white supremacists, Jesse killed his primary captive, Todd (Jesse Plemons), before stealing his car. That car that he used for his escape was a black Chevrolet El Camino.
Jesse’s getaway car is the basis for the sequel’s title, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. It’s also featured on the movie’s official poster. Todd’s car was a pickup, which is portrayed in the image. The classic El Camino was seen a few times within the TV series, parked outside the white supremacist compound where Jesse was being held as a hostage. Following Walt’s ambush, Jesse hopped in the car and sped off, crashing the gates as he broke out into elated laughter.
The El Camino was Jesse’s path to survival. After all those years of being swept up into dangerous situations, many of which were out of his control, Jesse finally had the chance to leave that part of him behind. The car was a symbol of his freedom. That freedom will be the focus of the upcoming movie as the DEA is still searching for him as seen in the trailer footage with Skinny Pete (Charles Baker).
It’s unclear if Jesse held onto the El Camino or if he ditched it while on the run. Either way, the car was an important factor in Jesse’s fate. Had he stayed behind at the compound, the cops would have arrested him before he found another way to escape. Walt, on the other hand, wasn’t so likely as his presumed death is expected to be a topic in the movie. It will be thrilling to find out where Jesse was headed while behind the wheel. El Camino: A Breaking Bad Story hits Netflix on October 11.
