Netflix’s hit show The End of the Fing World’s second season will drop on the streaming service in November, according to a brand new poster. The dark comedy, which airs on Netflix in the US, is based on a graphic novel by writer Charles Forsman, and was adapted for television by Charlie Covell (Misfits, Peep Show). The End of the Fing World was well-received by audiences and critics alike, as it told a tale of self-discovery for two teens - one of whom describes himself as a ‘psychopath’ while the other struggles with her complicated home life.
The social misfits named James and Alyssa, played by the excellent Alex Lawther (Black Mirror) and Jessie Barden (Penny Dreadful), decide to leave their homes in search of the latter’s estranged father in the first season. During their adventure, their relationship deepens as both teenagers learn more about each other - with James, who originally planned to kill Alyssa, beginning to feel a human connection to her that he struggles to do with others. Alyssa, on the other hand, also discovers that her ideal life away from her mother may not be the dream escape she would’ve thought. The End of the F***ing World’s first season ended with a significant cliffhanger, leading some to believe that the show could’ve been a ‘one and done’ situation, however that wasn’t the case.
Aside from releasing some promotional pictures and announcing new cast members like Naomi Ackie (Star Wars), there hasn’t been much information given with regard to the second season of The End of the F***ing World. That was until Netflix released a brand new poster on Twitter today that revealed both the upcoming premiere date for season 2 and some intriguing hints regarding the plot. The poster shows the character of Alyssa sitting at a cafe booth, with what looks to be an urn - with the character of James being shot in the season one finale, could this be a confirmation that one of the lead characters did die in that cliffhanger? It’s possible that this could be a misdirect, as it also appears that Alyssa is wearing a wedding dress, and with their relationship that grew in the first season - it’s equally likely that could be the alternative development.
Either way, it’s clear that Netflix is holding the cards close to their chest regarding the fate of the fan-favorite character of James. The core relationship between Alyssa and James is a favorite among the show’s core audience, so the dual-edge meaning of the poster is a fantastic tease for the upcoming season. While Alex Lawther will be reprising his role in this season, there’s been no explicit confirmation that James will be alive, meaning he could also return in flashbacks or as a hallucination.
Netflix is smartly using the season 1 cliffhanger in their favor, taking one of the most significant events in both the original graphic novel and the first season of the show and using it as a fascinating introduction to the second season. For those yet to watch the show, The End of the F***ing World is available to catch up with on Netflix now, and with only eight episodes to date, there’s plenty of time to get current before the season 2 premiere.
