Avengers: Endgame is shattering box office records as it enters into its second week, but Anthony Russo is “almost disappointed” by the film’s financial success. After over a decade of build up across 21 films, Avengers: Endgame is the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe up to this point. Anthony, with his brother Joe Russo, directed Avengers: Endgame in the hopes of making a satisfying conclusion to an epic story, and he doesn’t want people to forget just how much went into it all.

Even before its release, Avengers: Endgame was set to be in the running for the most profitable film of all time. As successful as Avengers: Infinity War was at the box office, Disney and Marvel were counting on Avengers: Endgame to crush expectations. While Avengers: Infinity War took eleven days to cross $1 billion, Avengers: Endgame needed only five. General reception of the film has been positive, enough so that Marvel is already hoping for it to be an Oscar contender after last year’s Black Panther earned a Best Picture nomination.

Speaking with the ReelBlend Podcast, Anthony said that he was “almost disappointed that the movie did so well, because it’s like, the box office story is literally dominating the conversation and it’s not the most interesting part of the story.” Joe added that the narrative around tentpole blockbuster movies is based on its box office gross. For Avengers: Endgame, determining whether it is remembered as a success or a failure depended on how many box office records it set. The brothers themselves wanted to make sure their “final chapter” for the MCU was the strongest part of the entire saga, one that left an impact on viewers for its characters, its story twists, and its payoff.

The Russos are referring to the fact that, as much as Avengers: Endgame is being talked about for its substance, the discussion around it is now being dominated by whether or not it will overtake Avatar as the number one grossing film of all time. With a worldwide gross of over $1.9 billion so far, and reaching that faster than any other film ever had, there is a chance that Avengers: Endgame will catch up with Avatar’s lifetime gross of $2.7 billion. For the Russos, the fact that the studios and the press are focusing on the money takes away from all the personal and emotional aspects that went into making the film for the fans.

Given how Avengers: Endgame is the grand finale for the entire first saga of the MCU, it was always going to be a financial juggernaut. Despite the Russos’ worries, people are talking about the movie for the right reasons and not just speculating about how much money it will ultimately make. That said, the massive box office success of Avengers: Endgame will definitely mean it is remembered more as an event than as just another film.
