Enter the Gungeon has surpassed three million copies sold ahead of the release of its sequel Exit the Gungeon. The game is a bullet-hell rogue-like developed by Dodge Roll and published by Devolver Digital. Enter the Gungeon originally released in April of 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PC before being ported to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2017. The title received mostly positive reviews and has been praised for its difficulty and sense of humor.
Enter the Gungeon is a very fast paced and difficult shooter which has been compared to other titles like The Binding of Isaac. The player must choose between four different protagonists that each have different abilities: Marine, Convict, Pilot, and Hunter. More characters can be unlocked as the game progresses. From there, players are tasked with traversing through a procedurally generated map while killing enemies and collecting treasure. The overall goal of Enter the Gungeon is to proceed through each floor and collect “The Gun That Can Kill The Past.”
Enter the Gungeon’s official Twitter page recently announced the game had surpassed the three million copies threshold. The company went on to thank their community for supporting Enter the Gungeon as much as they have over the last couple of years. Fans of the game gave the company an overwhelming amount of good wishes. Some fans praised the game as the best rogue-like ever made, while others inquired about new details concerning the sequel.
Development on Enter the Gungeon started in 2014 when four employees of Mythic Entertainment left to begin working on their own title. While the group decided to focus on a procedurally generated map layout, they also realized that hand crafting each room made the game more interesting. One of the groups favorite game mechanics they worked on was the dodge rolling ability, and therefore they took on the name Dodge Roll for their studio. After the game released Dodge Roll added in several updates including Advanced Gungeons and Draguns and A Farewell To Arms before deciding to begin working on a brand new title.
Difficult games like Enter the Gungeon have become extremely popular in the last several years. Unsurprisingly, a lot of this focus on difficulty can be traced back to the Dark Souls series, which seems to be a major influence on this title. In this period in gaming, fair but challenging gameplay is something a huge portion of the community both wants and enjoys. With the amount of effort and work put into Enter the Gungeon, it will be interesting to see what Dodge Roll comes up with next.
