A legion of fans would love nothing more than for Hannibal season 4 to happen, and that includes Child’s Play’s resident killer doll Chucky. When a TV series revolving around author Thomas Harris’ iconic cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter was first announced, many fans were skeptical about its prospects. This skepticism increased tenfold when Hannibal was picked up by NBC. After all, how could a show on one of the big four broadcast networks possibly do Dr. Lecter justice? It turns out, those fears were unwarranted.
Created by Bryan Fuller, Hannibal surpassed all expectations, turning in one of the most intricately plotted, and visually stunning dramas in the history of TV. Being on NBC did absolutely nothing to water Hannibal down either, as the level of graphic violence and adult content present on the series rivaled just about any other show out there, even if rampant f-bombs and nudity still weren’t allowed. Running from 2013-2015, Hannibal’s three seasons earned massive amounts of critical acclaim, and amassed an extremely dedicated audience.
Sadly, that cult following never translated to live ratings for NBC. Hannibal’s numbers were, to put it bluntly, pretty terrible from the beginning, and only got worse as the show went along. With CBS’ recent announcement of a series centered on Clarice Starling, the fan fervor for Hannibal season 4 has been reignited, and it’s worth remembering one surprising “Fannibal” no one would’ve expected, Chucky.
Even Child’s Play’s Chucky Wants Hannibal Season 4 to Happen
While some fans were angry with NBC when the network canceled Hannibal, Fuller actually pushed back, suggesting that the network had already stuck by the show longer than many outlets would’ve, and also allowed them to push the envelope when it comes to violence. However, it seems this forgiving attitude doesn’t extend to Child’s Play franchise villain Chucky. In 2017 sequel Cult of Chucky, the killer doll uses voodoo to have his soul inhabit multiple bodies at the same time. During a conversation between the multiple incarnations of Chucky, one says to another “I’m just saying, it behooves us to watch our step.” The other Chucky then wistfully replies: “Behooves, listen to you, you sound like Hannibal Lecter. I can’t believe they cancelled that show.”
It’s not clear when Chucky (or at least that particular Chucky) would’ve found the time to watch Hannibal, but hey, maybe that’s how he spent his down time between the events of Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky. For those fans wondering why exactly Chucky gave a shout out to Hannibal, it’s not as random as it might seem. Child’s Play creator (and Cult of Chucky writer/director) Don Mancini actually wrote and/or produced several episodes of Hannibal season 3, and clearly he enjoyed his time working on the acclaimed series. Hopefully Chucky eventually gets his wish, and Hannibal season 4 arrives to serve up more grotesque beauty.
