Daniel Radcliffe might be the face of the Harry Potter franchise but he wasn’t the only one to portray the titular character. A handful of other actors stood in for various aspects of Harry’s life during his journey as a young wizard. Here’s every person that portrayed Harry over the course of the eight films based on J.K. Rowling’s book series.

The world was introduced to a live-action version of Harry Potter when Daniel Radcliffe took on the role for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which debuted in 2001. The director, Chris Columbus, wanted Radcliffe for the lead role before auditions took place. At the time, Radcliffe’s parents decided they didn’t want their son to take the part due to the media intrusion it might have caused. After persistence from Columbus, the parents allowed Daniel to take the role. He would go on to play the character for a decade.

Radcliffe wasn’t the only one to portray Harry in the franchise’s first film. The movie included a vivid flashback featuring a key moment in the life of Harry and his parents, James and Lily. The scene revealed Harry’s first encounter with Lord Voldemort and explained how his parents were killed. During the scene, Harry was a baby and the character was played by a set of triplets. The first names of the babies were unknown since they were credited in the movie as the “Saunders Triplets.” An infant version of Harry was shown again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. This time around, the character was played by Toby Papworth.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Josh Herdman technically portrayed Harry for a short time. In the installment, Harry and Ron took Polyjuice Potion to expose the heir of Slytherin. After taking the potion, Harry was transformed into Gregory Goyle, one of Draco Malfoy’s best friends. Despite being played by Herdman, the character was Harry in disguise. Herdman notably portrayed Goyle for all eight Harry Potter movies.

Many of the unsung heroes of the Harry Potter movie series were the stunt doubles considering how physical many of the films turned out to be. David Holmes served as Radcliffe’s stunt double for much of the franchise. He also served Adrian Pucey in the first film and a Slytherin Quidditch player in the following film. While working on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Holmes was tragically injured in a stunt accident which left him paralyzed. Mark Mailley took over the stunts for the rest of the Harry Potter franchise but Holmes continued to be the one credited for the role.
