Rick and Morty season 4, episode 2 continues to show’s tradition of casting well-known actors in guest roles. “The Old Man and the Seat” sends Rick on a vendetta against someone who dared to use his secret pooping spot, while Morty and Jerry try to take down a dating app developed by Rick’s alien intern. The episode’s special guest stars include Taika Waititi, Kathleen Turner, Sam Neill, and Jeffrey Wright.
Both title characters in Rick and Morty are voiced by the show’s co-creator, Justin Roiland, with Dan Harmon also voicing various characters in the series. Chris Parnell voices hapless dad Jerry Smith, Sarah Chalke voices Beth Smith, and Spencer Grammer voices Morty’s sister, Summer. In the past, the show’s celebrity guest voices have included film director Werner Herzog, Christian Slater, Nathan Fillion, John Oliver, and Susan Sarandon, and we can expect more special guests still to come in Rick and Morty season 4.
Taika Waititi, the director of Thor: Ragnarok (who also played the blue rock-based alien Korg in that movie) is the voice of cheerful intern Glootie, while Waititi’s fellow Kiwi actor Sam Neill (who starred in Waititi’s film Hunt For the Wilderpeople) is the voice of Glootie’s boss, the leader of the Monogatrons. Kathleen Turner, known for her roles in movie’s like Romancing the Stone and The Man With Two Brains, voices the Manogatron Leader’s wife. In Rick’s storyline, his unsolicited toilet friend Tony is voiced by Jeffrey Wright, who plays Bernard in Westworld and is also set to play Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming Batman movie. Wright also voices Tony’s father, and Sherri Shepherd (known for her roles in sitcoms like Less Than Perfect and How I Met Your Mother) voices Tony’s wife.
Rick and Morty has featured plenty of strange aliens and beings over the course of the past three seasons, but only a few (like Birdperson, Mr. Meeseeks, and Mr. Poopybutthole) have appeared in recurring roles, and special guests generally only appear for one episode. It’s possible that we could see Glootie and the Monogatrons again, but one of Rick and Morty’s virtues is the way it avoids recycling material. Still, it was definitely fun to have the likes of Waititi, Neill, and Turner for this episode.
Also set to voice a character in season 4 is Paul Giamatti, known for his role in Billions and for starring in movies like American Splendor and The Illusionist. Knowing Rick and Morty, we can probably expect a few surprise guests in the upcoming episodes as well.
