A long list of popular TV shows are ending in 2020. Quite a few of them have earned large fan-followings over the years. Some, like Supernatural and Criminal Minds, are long-running shows that have been on the air for over ten years.
The year that closed out the 2010s saw the conclusion of what may arguably have been the decade’s biggest show, Game of Thrones. The HBO series finally ended with a polarizing eighth season and a highly controversial series finale in the first half of the year. 2019 was also the end for CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory, which was another of the decade’s most watched shows. Critically-acclaimed shows like Mr. Robot and Orange is the New Black concluded with their fourth and seventh seasons, respectively. Other notable shows that ended in 2019 include FOX’s Gotham, HBO’s Veep, Freeform’s Shadowhunters, and The CW’s iZombie.
Some of the shows that were thought to be ending in 2019, such as Homeland and Modern Family, will actually join this year’s list of cancelled shows. Here’s every TV show airing their long-awaited series finale in 2020.
Empire
Empire, a FOX series that revolves around people who live and work in the world of hip hop, was renewed for a sixth and final 20-episode season in 2019, which will wrap up in 2020. The announcement that the show was ending came when the show was still mired in controversy due to the Jussie Smollett scandal.
Supernatural
Supernatural, a show that recently reached the impressive 300-episode milestone, is finally ending after 15 seasons. The CW series, which has been on the air since the network was still called the “WB” back in 2005, will end the stories of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). This time, the Winchester brothers, who have battled monsters, angels, and demons, are now going up against their most powerful nemesis yet, God.
Homeland
Claire Danes, who stars as Carrie Matthison on Showtime’s political thriller series, Homeland, confirmed in 2018 that Homeland would end with season 8. The season, which is said to take Danes’ character to Afghanistan, will premiere in February. For its last season, Homeland will no longer attempt to draw parallels to the presidency of Donald Trump.
How to Get Away With Murder
How to Get Away With Murder, a celebrated legal drama from producer Shonda Rhimes, is on its sixth and final season, which premiered in September. It was confirmed in July 2019 that the ABC series, known partially for the award-winning performance of its lead actress, Viola Davis, will end in 2020. Ever since the show’s first season, How to Get Away With Murder is consistently in contention for a number of prestigious TV awards, including the Emmys, the Golden Globes, and more. The series was nominated for three Emmys in 2019 alone.
Modern Family
The beloved comedy series Modern Family was widely thought to be ending last year, but ABC is bringing the award-winning sitcom back for one more season. Modern Family, which premiered in 2009, is finally ending with season 11, despite the fact that it still performs well in the ratings.
13 Reasons Why
13 Reasons Why is a show that’s been surrounded by controversy since the beginning due to in large part to its approach to issues like suicide. The teen drama has long been one of Netflix’s most talked-about original shows. It’s been confirmed that 13 Reasons Why season 4 will be its last, though no release date has been officially announced.
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD
Agents of SHIELD is the show that started it all for Marvel TV, and its ending represents a final chapter for Marvel Television. Agents of SHIELD outlasted all other Marvel shows, despite being on the brink of cancellation for quite a while now. Surprisingly, the series received an order for a seventh season before season 6 even aired. The last season of Agents of SHIELD will see the team embark on a mission that involves time travel.
Arrow
The show that kicked off The CW’s Arrowverse is set to end on January 28. The series, which stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, is in the midst of a 10-episode eighth season. Only three episodes remain, one of which being the fourth installment in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover. Arrow’s final season focuses on the end of Oliver’s journey, something that the show has been building up to since season 7. After Arrow ends, The CW will replace the series with Green Arrow and the Canaries, a show that will center on Oliver’s daughter from the future, Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara) as the next Emerald Archer.
The 100
The 100 began as a series about a group of teenagers struggling to survive after finding themselves in a dangerous, post-apocalyptic world. The 100, which is concluding with season 7, joins Supernatural and Arrow as one more long-running CW series ending in 2020. Also, it seems almost poetic that The 100’s series finale will be its 100th episode.
