Spider-Man encountered a new type of villain in Spider-Man: Far From Home, one that managed to trick him (and the rest of the world) with multiple illusions, but what did Spider-Man see in the series of visions that Mysterio created for him? Spider-Man: Far From Home is the second Spider-Man film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his fifth appearance in the MCU overall, and the film that officially marked the end of Phase 3.
Spider-Man: Far From Home followed Peter Parker to the other side of the world during a school trip to Europe. Little did he know, there was a big menace following him around. The film also dealt with the aftermath of the events in Avengers: Endgame, namely the snap (now called “the blip”) and Tony Stark’s death. The villain this time was Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), a former Stark Industries employee with a mastery in holographic-illusions, who made sure he gave Spider-Man some truly nightmarish visions.
After discovering Mysterio’s secret, Spider-Man was tricked by him into believing he was meeting with Nick Fury. When Spider-Man realized it was all an illusion, a series of visions appeared. These included a mirror vision that unleashed multiple Spider-Men that attacked the real one, Spider-Man wearing his homemade suit (and confronted by a giant Mysterio, followed by a regular-size one), a metallic structure falling dangerously close to him as well as a giant fist, Tony Stark’s tombstone and Iron Man zombie, an army of Mysterios, and Spider-Man trapped in a snowball that included the Avengers Tower (and that turned out to be Mysterio’s head). This is the first part of the visions in Spider-Man: Far From Home, as he was later tricked into believing Fury had arrived to save him.
The second part begins when Mysterio was supposedly shot by Fury (with Beck appearing in his mo-cap suit), and several agents arriving to help Spider-Man. Fury asked him who else did he tell about Mysterio’s secret, and is later revealed to be the real Beck. The visions go back to a “close space” with construction material and metallic pieces falling around Spider-Man, ending with him being hit by a real train. With all this, Mysterio managed to deeply affect Peter Parker/Spider-Man beyond physical pain and his superhero identity. Telling him he’s “just a scared little kid in a sweatsuit”, zombie Iron Man crawling out of the ground, and the feeling of betrayal after dropping the names of his friends are way more painful than any physical hits.
Mysterio made sure he left a big cliffhanger in the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and with the recent issues between Sony and Disney, it’s unknown how (or if) this will be addressed in the next Spider-Man film – but at least he left a good dose of trippy, nightmarish visions that fans can analyze over and over again in search for Easter eggs and other hidden clues.
