Sam Raimi wants to direct another Evil Dead movie starring Bruce Campbell. Raimi started the Evil Dead franchise back in 1981 with The Evil Dead and followed up the cult classic with two sequels: Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Raimi also produced the 2013 Evil Dead reboot and co-created the Starz original series Ash vs. Evil Dead.

The Evil Dead franchise has remained relevant since the 80s, even with fans seeing mass amounts of horror movies since then. Unfortunately for fans, Bruce Campbell retired as Ash Williams after the cancellation of Ash vs. Evil Dead in 2018. This crushed fans’ hopes of ever getting a fourth season of the series or ever getting a fourth movie starring Campbell. Campbell has given his blessing for the Evil Dead franchise to move on without him (which it is), but Raimi still wants to return to the directing chair with Campbell in front of the camera.

On an Ask-Me-Anything chat on Reddit (via Bloody Disgusting), Raimi briefly talked about the upcoming Evil Dead movie and his hopes for the future of the franchise. When asked about the upcoming film and the character Ash, Raimi replied, “Bruce, Rob [Tapert] and I are working with a young filmmaker who is writing a new Evil Dead story that he will direct. As for me…. I would love to direct a new Evil Dead movie… but I’d really like to do it with Bruce. And he says he’s retired the character. I hope not.” Raimi also mentioned that he would definitely be interested in producing a sequel to the 2013 reboot if Fede Álvarez wrote and directed the film.

While Ash Williams seems to be out of the picture for the foreseeable future, another Evil Dead movie is in development. Last October, Rami confirmed that a new Evil Dead movie was in development, but that Campbell was producing rather than starring in the movie. Not a lot is known about the project just yet, except for the fact that Raimi hand-chose the director for the new film.

Having both Raimi and Campbell return to the Evil Dead franchise would truely shake the horror community. Both men have of course been involved with all of the Evil Dead projects, but specifically having Raimi direct a new Evil Dead starring Campbell as Ash would be big news. Raimi seemed to be mostly producing after Drag Me to Hell in 2009 and Oz: The Great and Powerful in 2013. There are a few films at this point that Raimi plans to direct, but having him direct another Evil Dead movie would truly be a treat for horror fans.
